Where the money actually comes from in Red Dead Redemption: bounties, the treasure golds, legendary pelts and a few side earners, with the real numbers for each.
The one thing to know. Your honor sets every price. With high honor shops pay 50% more for everything you sell, with low honor 50% less, everywhere but Thieves' Landing. So the money in Red Dead Redemption comes from playing straight: bounties brought in alive, and pelts and gold sold in the state that pays most.

Take a poster from the board, find the target and bring him back. Alive pays double what dead does, so wing him, lasso him and ride him in. The biggest bounties are on the West Elizabeth posters in Blackwater and Manzanita Post. Capturing alive also earns honor, which pushes up the price of everything else you sell.
The Red Dead Wiki lists five West Elizabeth targets worth $600 alive. One bounty at each of 20 places counts toward 100%, and our bounty locations guide lists them all.
Every amount on this page appears in at least two independent sources (the Red Dead Wiki, GamingBolt, CBR, Prima Games, PokerListings and a Steam community price guide), except the three marked as the Red Dead Wiki's own figures. Prices are at neutral honor unless the page says otherwise.
What is the fastest way to make money in Red Dead Redemption?
Keep your honor high and hunt bounties. A target brought in alive pays double, the biggest posters are in Blackwater and Manzanita Post, and high honor makes everything you sell worth half as much again. The nine treasure golds add $2,175 at neutral honor on top.
Is there a money cheat in Red Dead Redemption?
Yes. THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, WE THANK YOU! gives you $500, but turning on any cheat disables trophies and achievements, so keep a save from before you use it.
Does honor change prices in Red Dead Redemption?
Yes. With high honor every shop pays 50% more for what you sell, and with low honor 50% less. Thieves' Landing is the exception.
How much are the treasure golds worth?
At neutral honor: Rhodes' Gold $100, Jackson's $125, Calhoun's $150, Tubman's $175, Brown's $200, Douglass' $225, Garrison's $300, Pickett's $400 and Stonewall's $500, $2,175 in all. They have no other use, so sell them.
