How many treasures are there in Red Dead Redemption?

Nine. Each one is a rank of the Treasure Hunter challenge, ranks 2 to 10, and reaching rank 10 makes you a Legendary Treasure Hunter. All nine are listed above and plotted on the interactive map.

How do you get the first treasure map?

From a random encounter: a treasure hunter, Chu Fook, under attack from bandits. Save him or search his body and you get the first map, which is Treasure Hunter rank 1. Every treasure after that holds the next map, so they come in this order.
